2.       Introduction

a.       An Overview.         RDE as a hub of collaborative Research and Development is committed to self-reliance through indigenization of defence-related requirements of equipment, products, vehicles, bridges, trackways, weapons, ammunition, optronics, simulators etc., for providing indigenous solutions to the Tri-services, Defence Production Establishments, Law Enforcement Agencies and civil government entities as well as friendly countries, through partnership with the public and private industry, academia and R&D setups within the country and abroad.

b.       Range of Products.          RDE has a vast spectrum of product range including but not limited to superstructure on tracked and wheeled vehicles, weapons, ammunition, training simulators and optronics devices.

c.       Our Services.        RDE offers engineering solutions for Defence product development, while focusing on customized product design, design analysis/ optimization, quality assurance, manufacturing processes and test/ trials by credible resources. Fabrication and manufacturing is carried out through local industry of Pakistan.

d.       Our Goal.     Considerable technology diffusion has been achieved over the years. The real contribution, however, lies in creating trained manpower pools, absorption of new technologies, broadening of local Defence equipment development and production capability, all leading progressively to our avowed goal of self-reliance.

5.       Functions

a.       Maintain constant liaison with the three services to keep abreast with present and future requirements, with the aim of supporting them in Indigenous Technological solutions.

b.       Assist Defence Production Establishments in development of components, spare parts/ sub assemblies and identification of local sources of raw material and their subsequent qualification.

c.       Keep abreast with developments in related technologies promptly identify new and upcoming requirements arising from evolving nature of armed conflicts, analyze areas necessitating indigenous development carryout feasibility studies and share with the three services for possible adoption.

d.       Provide institutionalized project management for sustenance, modification and up gradation of existing/ newly assigned projects through constant liaise with users.

e.       Advise Ministry of Defence Production on projects to ensure synergy between public sector organizations for avoiding duplication.

f.        Carryout design validity, project/ quality management, inspections and trials for assigned projects and hold patents/ intellectual proprietary rights and act as Authority Holding Sealed Particulars (AHSP) for the developed projects.

g.       Build knowledge capacity by attending relevant fora (Seminars, conferences, boards and exhibitions etc) in specific areas, both inland and abroad.

h.       Utilize surplus capacity to meet requirements of public/ private sector and other countries through Direct Contracting.

i.        Suggest need based areas of research to academic institutions and public/ private facilities to optimize and utilize research potential and expertise.

6.       History.        Three erstwhile tri-services R&D organizations - Military Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (MVRDE), Military Vehicles Research & Development Establishment (ARDE) and the Institute of Optronics (IOP),were established under DGMP/ MoDP (erstwhile DP Div, MoD) to cater for imposed embargos and achieving thenational aim of Self Reliance through Indigenization. Merger of the aforementioned three organizations as RDE in May 2020 revitalized potential and enabled synergy of efforts.
